Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.”
I’m not sure what to think of this movie to be honest. I’ve seen it 3 times now and I’ve liked it more since the first time I saw it but I’m not sure if I love it or if I just like it.
It’s first of all a sci-fi movie but I would say it’s as much a drama movie as well. It’s very well made but it opens a lot of questions, logical ones… for example: Would we really have tried to make contact with aliens like this if we would’ve had a similar situation in real life? Would we really have done it like they did in the movie? Because some of it makes no sense and this movie is suppose to mirror our reality, not 30 years into the future, but in present day. I wouldn’t mind if it were plain and straight sci-fi… but its hard to do that when they repetitive want you to feel like this is or could happen in real life right now. (I hope you understand what I mean.)
The drama part is deep and very emotional. It will without a doubt make you feel something wether you want it or not and it will have the effect to slow down the mystery of the movie a bit and the pace. Amy Adams did a really good performance and her character feels very real.
I do however LOVE the sound effects in Arrival! They are so simple but so Powerful, will make you shiver sometimes. Maybe I compare it to much to a favorite movie of mine that is quite in the same genre too and that movie is CONTACT from 1997 with Jodie Foster, also a drama/sci-fi…
So, when I say that I’m not sure what to think about it, it’s because I’ve like it a little bit more every time I’ve watched it and taken it less seriously every time too. It feels more like a drama combined with sci-fi than the other way around. If you are a sci-fi nerd I’m not sure what you’ll think but if you love dramas than you’re in for something, something that will raise questions and debates with your friends that have seen it too. Its a good movie for sure, hell I’ve watched it 3 times already… but I will leave it to you to decide how good it is.
RATING: not sure yet but above 6/10
Would have love to see more extra featurettes, a short documentary of close encounters or aliens… would have been great.
